John Mills reports on the recent Solomon Islands conference, 'Reconciliation: The Way Forward', held with Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu to coincide with the launch of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission. It was followed by a workshop for former combatants.

Retired Archbishop Desmond Tutu helped launch a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) in Solomon Islands on 29th April. He also spoke at an Initiatives of Change conference held to coincide with the launch.

The Arabic version of the award winning documentary film The Imam and the Pastor was launched in Lebanon on 27th March under the slogan ‘Together in service of sustainable Reconciliation’. Imad Karam, who works with For the Love of Tomorrow films in the UK, reports.

A book launch of Father of the House, the memoirs of the late Kim Edward Beazley, took place on 11 February in the Australian Federal Parliament. As Minister for Education 1972-75, Beazley was responsible for some of the most enduring reforms of the Whitlam Labor Government.

Tools for Change Kuala Lumpur – the first conference of its kind to be held outside Switzerland – last week brought together 80 from corporate and civil society sectors, from media and education, to learn more about empowering and implementing change through generating trust, integrity and forming networks for action.

A new edition of Michael Smith’s book, Trust and integrity in the global economy, has been published by St Paul Press in Mumbai, India. The book was given a ceremonial launch at a recent ‘Heart of Effective Leadership’ conference at Asia Plateau, the IofC conference centre in Panchgani, on 4 February.

Two Nigerians internationally famous for their work in interfaith reconciliation spent three weeks in Australia, 24 October to 14 November, as guests of Initiatives of Change. They are Imam Muhammad Ashafa and Pastor James Wuye from the north-central city of Kaduna, where they head the Muslim-Christian Interfaith Mediation Centre.

 

An International Youth Forum on the theme 'The role of youth: action on the Millennium Development Goals toward a peaceful world' brought 138 young people from 36 countries to Bandung, Indonesia 23-30 June 2008.
