DISCOVER THE OTHER

Discover the Other

Discover the Other (DTO) is a global eduation initiative. It works with communities and individuals to build better relationships across diversity.

Drawing on 80 years experience of Initiatives of Change, DTO unpacks the process of discovering and relating to “the other” and seeks to empower individuals to act with initiative and responsibility.

Who is the Other?

Everyday we interact with people who are different from ourselves – whether by culture, faith, politics, race, wealth, gender or personality. All too often we approach these differences with fear, selfishness or a sense of our own superiority.

What is the process?

DTO identifies and builds on four keys to relationships:

  • Stepping out of your comfort zone
  • Listening
  • Focussing on what's right not who's right
  • Starting with yourself.
How does it work?

Through workshops, courses and facilitated dialogues DTO provides specific tools to form better relationships. This leads to greater trust, dynamic partnerships and enhanced teamwork. As individuals become more aware of the needs of others they become more responsible in their behaviour towards meeting each others needs.

Workshops

Designed to fit the requirements of different groups, ranging from short one or two-day workshops to longer residential courses.

The programs are developed to help participants:

1. understand the past and present context for dealing with cultural diversity
2. develop the tools necessary to build and sustain relationships
3. gain a collective awareness of the human values which are basic to relationships
4. acquire techniques to facilitate accurate and effective interpersonal communications across cultural, religious and geo-political divides
5. identify key target areas and design a corresponding plan for developing more effective relationships
